Russia was a standout team in the women’s division of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series in Moscow on Friday.
The Russian women had an amazing three day tournament as they demolished team after team in the European series. After their win, the Olympic bound team also found out which teams they will face in the pool rounds of the Tokyo Olympics.
Russia will be part of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Pool A, a tough pool for the Olympic debutants as they will have to face New Zealand, Great Britain and Kenya in such an early stage of the tournament.
But their back to back win will surely bring them in some confidence for the Olympic Games this July.
Day one on home soil, they beat Germany and Portugal with a beautiful display of skills from the Russia, to add the icing on the cake, they demolished Wales 52-0.
Day two was a similar show, it was all about Russia as they beat Belgium 36-0, Poland 35-5 and Scotland 22-5 to earn the valuable 20 points from the event. They now have 40 in total after a good set of games in Lisbon, Portugal a few weeks ago in round one.
The Polish ladies finished second to the Russians and Scotland took home the third spot, Poland now has 32 points to put them on the overall second spot while Spain falls to third with 32.
The Russian women have recently sealed their spot in the Tokyo Olympics after beating Kazakhstan in the Olympic Repechage in Monaco a few weeks ago. Russia’s long awaited moment was greeted with the most creative victory celebration as the Russian women formed a human bicycle and paddled their way to Tokyo after the final buzzer.
In 2016, the Russian fell short to the Spanish women a the Olympic Repechage, missing out on the Inaugural Rio Olympics. They since then had five years to hone their skills and build a team that will now make their debut on the big stage.
