The Argentina men have done it again, the Los Pumas were crowned champions of the Quest For Gold after defeating Olympic favorites like USA in Los Angeles.
The Quest For Gold was set up to be some teams last practice match before flying to Tokyo and Argentina will join defending gold medalists, Fiji, as reigning champions before the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Argentina was also crowned the champions of the practice tournaments, Madrid 7s and Dubai Invitational 7s.
The Los Pumas had a dominating tournament in Los Angeles as they took their third trophy since the pandemic restrictions have been lifted.
Argentina took home the Cup after winning five out of six tournaments, they lost to Great Britain in their last match. Two players form Argentina stood out and stepped up to take the big win, Lucho Gonzalez and Lucio Cintini were scoring tries and making big tackles for the Los Pumas.
The Quest For Gold was no easy battle for the team as they had to face some of the top teams from around the world including the incoming Olympic silver medalists Great Britain.
The Los Pumas kicked off their tournament facing Great Britain in a nail bitter match, but the Argentines kept their momentum and beat GB 21-19. They next had to go through the Korean 7s team which will make they Olympic debut this July. Santi Gomez Cora led the team to a dominating finish against the Asian nation with a 49-0 finish.
Their next match was now against the host nation, the USA Eagles, both teams exchange brilliant attack and defensive games before USA folded to the Argentines, final score 19-12.
Their winning streak continued as they faced off with USA again on day two of the tournament, this time Argentina took a strong hold on the Americans as they beat the Eagles 31-19. The Argentinian’s then took on Korea once against and further more, demolished the Asians 55-0 before the final buzzer. The Los Pumas last and final match however, was a loss to the silver medalists, Great Britain seemed to have gotten on their feat and performed as they we expected but it was all too late.
The Argentines were crowned champions by points system, with the Tokyo Olympics only around a month away, teams have been stepping up wanting to enter Japan with the mindset of a win. Argentina is the one team who has had more than two wins in an international tournament since the pandemic, surely a boost for the team as they aim for a gold medal finish in the Olympic Games.
