The current Olympic gold medalists from 2016, Fiji men’s 7 are leading the board for day one of the Oceania sevens tournament in Townsville, Australia.
Fiji won the inaugural Olympic rugby sevens gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. They won their opening game against the hosts Australia 26-14 at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium yesterday.
The Pacific Islanders then went on to battle with the Oceania Barbarians, the Barbarians squad is comprised of contracted Australian players and members of the Uni Sevens squad, they beat the team 32-12.
New Zealand also have a 100% winning record as the World Cup champions and Commonwealth gold medalists won both their matches on day one.
New Zealand defeated Oceania Barbarians 28-5 as showed dominance on the field, they then went on to defeat hosts Australia men’s 7s in a tight battle for the contest, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. final score 24-21.
With the women’s games, the hosts Australia are the defending champions and have won their two games on day one. The New Zealand Black Ferns have also won two games on day one.
Both teams beat the Fijiana 7s and the Oceania Barbarians with an undeniable lead. New Zealand women’s are the current reigning women’s World and Commonwealth Games champions. They trashed the Oceania side 51-0 and also finished on a high scoring game with Fiji, with final score 33-14.
Olympic gold medalists Australia Beat Fiji 31-17 and the Oceania side with a massive lead 38-7.
All teams will battle it out against the other three teams twice. The team with the highest ranking after the three day tournament will be crowned as champions.
Everyone is excited to see Australia face the Black Ferns before the Olympic Games. In 2016, the Australian women, beat the Black Ferns in the Rio Olympics with a dramatic finish. The Black Ferns have since then vowed to win the next gold medal and improve their game.
