The Jamaican women’s 7s team were set to compete in Pool B of the Olympic Repechage this weekend. The team was set to go through a round robin stage against Kazakhstan, PNG and Tunisia.
But an unfortunate mishap with their flights sees them missing the games entirely. Jamaica is said to have missed their connection flight in New York City which means the team had to pull out of the tournament.
The women’s team of Jamaica was in a different schedule from their men’s team who made it to Monaco on and was able to battle it out with the French men as they kicked off both their tournament.
With the Jamaican women missing out on the tournament schedule, the women’s Pool B will now see a shorter time frame as only three teams are left to battle it out for a spot at the Semi Finals.
It’s unfortunate that Jamaican women’s 7s would miss out the games they have been preparing for through out the past months.
Uganda men’s 7s also had to pull out but for a different issue, some players have reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus upon their arrival. It was also reported earlier in the week that their head coach, Physio and two players had to be left behind before the flights due to also returning positive results for the virus.
Monaco officials have reassured the public that proper Covid-19 strict protocols have been followed as result. The team is now in lockdown quarantine in their camp in Monaco as they recover from the virus.
The Olympic Repechage for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games however are still in full form as they continue to determine which team deserves the last three tickets to Japan.
