Lomani will be switching from rugby league to rugby sevens, saying “My future is in 7s rugby”, according to the Fiji Sun.
The 25 year old Apisai Lomani aims to leave a mark in Super 7s Series. Lomani shows no regrets in his decision to switch rival code.
The Tailevu native wishes to continue his rugby 7s career and hopes to represent fiji in the near future.
In the First Leg of the SUper 7s Series at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, Lomani played for the tough LAR Barbarian Brothers. Where they ended their race after being defeated by the Police Blue in the Cup semifinals, with the final score of 5-14.
One of his teammates was none other than Fiji Sevens star Seremaia ‘Jerry’ Tuwai. Other Players he was able to play alongside were Pio Tuwai, Taniela Sadrugu, Juita Wainiqolo, Kitione Salawa Jnr and Sireli Maqala. The halfback played for the Newtown in the Nasinu Rugby Union club competitions
“I started off playing rugby league with Nadera Panthers,” he said. “I switched to 7s as it is much faster with only seven players unlike in leagues where you are involved in too many contacts.
“But you need to be fit to play 7s and I want to stay in the sport and hopefully represent Fiji in future. The game itself is fast nowadays so i have to be fit to match the pace of the game here and internationally.”
“I was a young boy when I heard about Jerry and Pio Tuwai and to team up with them is such a great experience. I have really learnt a lot,” Lomani added.
He has also won the Burebasaga 7s playing for the Nausori club 7s squad. Which had some former reps like Glen Cakautini and Setareki Bituniyata.
“Anyone can be a national rep, only if you are fit. But the selection is God’s. If I’m chosen, then I am prepared.”
