Asia Rugby recently announced their top 32 amazing women of the region. In 2019 World Rugby launched their ‘Try and Stop Us’ campaign using 15 inspirational stories of women of rugby around the world.
Asia Rugby received applications from 32 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, UAE, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. In total, 84 applications came in
Now they’ve chosen their top 32, including the likes of Sevens superstars like Butsaya Bunrak of Thailand, Thannuja Weerakkody of India, Wang Xizi of China and Anna Takovleva of Kazakhstan, Angella Camille San Juan of the Philippines, Rozliana Binti Mohd Ridwan of Malaysia and match officials like Christabelle Lim Mee of Singapore and Sarah Abdelbaki of Syria.
The ‘Women in rugby’ brand identity in 2019 was a landmark global campaign. The global campaign was supported by national unions and regions,they used striking imagery and the inspiring stories of 15 women and girls involved in rugby no matter her role in the sport, who are ‘unstoppable’. They have challenged barriers to participation and demonstrated how rugby has empowered them to get where they are today, both on and off the pitch.
2019’s lineup included ladies Like Stacey Fluhler of the Black Ferns, Shweta Shahi of India, Kiki Morgan of USA and more. The campaign was meant to normalize women’s participation in the sport and increase awareness.
