England head of sevens Simon Armor has brought in academy player Femi Sofolarin into his senior squad for the HSBC Singapore Sevens this weekend because of an injury to Dan Bibby.

The 19-year-old Sofolarin will act as the 13th man in the absence of Bibby, who suffered a shoulder injury during the Hong Kong Sevens last weekend with playmaker Tom Mitchell back in the main squad after recovering from a hamstring problem.

“It’s great to have Tom Mitchell back in for this weekend who is an important playmaker and leader of this team,” said Armor.

“It’s obviously disappointing to have lost Dan Bibby through injury, however, it provides another opportunity for our young exciting academy players and the team have consistently responded well to injuries this year always showing the effort and fight that optimises England Sevens.

“We’ve had a great week’s training  We’re confident and excited about the upcoming tournament where we’ll face a tough pool on day one.”

England are fifth in the standings with 90 points, with nine points separating them from South Africa, who are fourth on 99 points.

Only the top four teams after the 10-leg world series earn an automatic spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Singapore is the eighth leg with England facing series leaders USA, Wales and Kenya in Pool C.

The England squad for Singapore is: Tom Mitchell, Jamie Barden, Tom Bowen, Phil Burgess, Richard De Carpentier, Will Edwards, Mike Ellery, Harry Glover, Charlton Kerr, Will Muir, Ryan Olowofela. Dan Norton, Femi Sofolarin (13th man).
