Argentine women eye first-ever Olympic Games

The Argentine Women’s Sevens team have come together for its first training camp at the La Plata Rugby Club as they prepare for a key season that includes qualifying for the 2020
Tokyo Olympics.

The first training run of the squad coached by Daniel Villen got underway on January 28, and all eyes are already firmly fixed on Pan American Games in Lima in August and the qualification tournament for the Olympics on June 29-30.

“The main objective of this first training camp is in the physical part, and in skills one-on-one in addition to the tackle and ruck,” outlined head coach Villen.

“This year is very important. We will be competing in the qualification tournament for the Women’s World Series in Hong Kong, apart from the Pan-American Games and the qualification for the Olympics,” Villen added.

After this preliminary training camp ends on February 2, the national team will meet again at the end of February with the possibility of a training camp in Brazil where they could play games against the Brazilian national women’s team.

Argentina narrowly failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics finishing runners-up to Colombia in the Continental qualifiers in 2015.
